It was great to read about the National Wine Careers Week which took place from the 12th – 18th May.
Led by Plumpton College, home of the UK Wine Education Centre, the drive was supported by English sparkling wine brand Nyetimber – one of the UK’s largest employer within the wine sector – as well as WSET, WineGB and Drinks United.
English wine is one of the most up and coming in the world for sure, and the sector now employs more than 400,000 people; while generating significant value towards the economy. The growth spurt is highlighted by the statistic that hectarage planted has increased by 123% in only the last decade.

Despite being a key figure in the hospitality and retail sectors, many people are unaware of the value, opportunities and careers that the industry provides, so the week was ultimately to raise awareness and try and bring into focus some of the fantastic things that a career in wine can offer.
Leading into the first inception of the Careers Week, CEO of Nyetimber Eric Heerema said, “We are very proud to be supporting the inaugural National Wine Careers Week, which shines a light on the breadth and diversity of jobs within the UK wine industry. Each year we work with Plumpton College to offer work experience to its students, and it’s been amazing to see the different areas of specialism that our hires go on to pursue; demonstrating that a career in wine can take people in so many exciting directions.”
As the UK wine industry continues its boom, it’s an excellent time to be raising awareness, and a fantastic time for budding viticulturists to plant the roots of their careers, so be sure to keep eyes peeled for the Careers Week in 2026.
