A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Sous Chef to join a busy, food-led gastro inn in Hertfordshire, serving around 200 covers a day.
With an established kitchen team, a Head Chef who values a good work-life balance and genuine flexibility around your shifts, this is a great opportunity for a chef who enjoys a busy service without wanting to sacrifice their time outside work.
Please note: We are unable to offer sponsorship for this role and candidates must have the right to work in the UK without visa sponsorship. If you require Sponsorship please do not apply, thank you.
This is a popular country inn with a lively food operation, a varied menu and plenty going on throughout service. The kitchen caters for a high volume of covers, so you’ll need to enjoy a fast-paced environment and be confident keeping standards high when things get busy.
You’ll be joining a solid brigade, with around five chefs on during service alongside two Kitchen Porters. The Head Chef is already working a four-day week, and they’re open to discussing a working pattern that suits the right person.
The standard hours are around 48 per week, but there may even be scope to work four days, depending on how the shifts are arranged.
What’s on offer?
- Competitive salary, dependent on experience
- Tronc shared equally across the team, typically around £1.50–£2 per hour
- Flexible working pattern, with shifts open to discussion
- Potential for a four-day working week
- Closed Mondays and Tuesdays
- Free on-site parking
- Established kitchen team
They’re looking for a capable, hands-on chef who enjoys leading from the front and can bring a positive attitude to a busy kitchen.
Previous Sous Chef experience would be ideal, and you’ll need to be organised, reliable and comfortable working at pace, while being a good team player.
As Sous Chef, you will:
- Support the Head Chef with the day-to-day running of the kitchen
- Help lead the brigade through busy services, keeping food quality and presentation consistent
- Take responsibility for your section and ensure dishes leave the kitchen to a high standard
- Help organise preparation, service and kitchen workflow
- Support ordering, stock control and waste management
- Maintain excellent food hygiene and health and safety standards
- Help train, support and motivate junior members of the team
- Step up and take charge of the kitchen when required
- Work closely with the Head Chef to maintain standards and keep the operation running smoothly
A full driving licence and access to your own transport are strongly preferred, as the location makes driving the most practical way to get to work.
If you’re looking for a busy kitchen, a settled team and a role where your working pattern can be discussed rather than dictated, this is well worth exploring.
With the inn closed two days a week and a Head Chef who already enjoys a four-day pattern, there’s a genuine opportunity to find a setup that works for you.
Due to the number of applicants received, unfortunately we are unable to reply individually to each. Should your application be suitable for the role, then you’ll hear from us within 48 hours, thank you.
